Man and woman lounging on sofa

I’m big on loungewear.

As soon as I get home, I get into some form of ultra-comfortable clothes. Sometimes its sweats. Other times baggy shorts and a t-shirt.  Sometimes it’s a comfortable pair of jeans.

I take my lounging seriously. There’s no need to be uncomfortable.  It’s also fun to seek out stylish loungewear… you know when someone shows up unannounced.

Here’s my list of favorite types of loungewear for women and men.

What Is Loungewear?

Loungewear can be kind of hard to classify from a fashion standpoint. Basically, it can be almost anything that feels comfortable that you might just hang around the house in. From a style standpoint, loungewear is the step between pajamas and clothing you might wear to work.

Loungewear is house clothing, relaxing clothing that you wear when you aren’t working out or planning on going out on the town. It’s generally non-restrictive and comfortable and typically made from soft materials. It’s casual clothing that looks and feels good.

A. Types of loungewear for women

It’s time to relax a little. Loungewear can be just as fashionable as all those stylish outfits that are tight and restrictive or made with straps going in weird places, or whatever. Learn how to relax with your clothing and find the types of loungewear that you’re going to love to wear.

Tank and shorts

Short sets are designed with comfort in mind. These sets come with comfortable cloth shorts and a matching top in a solid color or pattern. The shorts are typically made with a stretchy elastic or drawstring waist for ultimate comfort. The fit always conforms to your body, instead of your body being forced to conform to it. The tops are usually made in larger or oversized designs that are loose and non-restrictive. These sets are made to be loose and airy all over.

Thermal Underwear

Thermal underwear is perfect as loungewear. Thermals are made to be lightweight but highly insulating. They’re usually made with soft, non-irritating material like natural cotton. It’s the weave design of thermals that makes them insulting and warm. Thermal underwear fits close against the skin but it is not meant to be tight or restrictive. Thermals are usually designed in long pant styles with soft, stretchy waistbands. The tops are long-sleeved, usually with a crew or V-neck design.

Sweats

Sweats are a classic and popular loungewear option. Sweatpants and sweatshirts are made to fit loosely. They’re made with thick, soft fabric that’s warm and comfortable around your body. Sweatpants are usually made with elastic waistbands that stretch and move with your body. Sweatshirts are most often made in crew neck or hooded styles.

Tracksuits

Tracksuits are sort of like fancier sweatsuits. Tracksuits are made with soft, thicker fabric like sweatsuits. The pants usually have drawstring waistbands. Tracksuits are pants with matching jackets made with the same fabrics in the same colors. Tracksuit jackets are usually made in zip-up styles and come with or without hoods. Tracksuits are made with a variety of soft fabrics in varying degrees of thickness.

Leggings

Leggings are worn as athletic wear, but they feel so great they make a great pair of lounge pants, too. Leggings are made to be form-fitting from hip to ankle. They’re usually made in lightweight, comfortable material designs to keep you cool.

That’s because they’re designed to be worn while exercising. However, that same lightweight, form-fitting style makes leggings incredibly comfortable and easy to wear around the house. They conform to your movements and flex with you without bunching up or riding up, so you simply have a perfect fit.

Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits can be worn as regular outdoor clothing or as pajamas, depending on the fabric and style they’re made with. But many jumpsuits are designed to be loungewear, too. When they’re made to be loungewear, jumpsuits are designed with soft fabrics in comfortably fitted styles. They’re one-piece outfits that can be made as shorts or pants with tank or T-shirt tops. Jumpsuits are made with cinched elastic waists that fit comfortably.

Making Loungewear Fashionable

You can still be stylish even if you’re lounging. You’re going to feel best when you know you look good, too. So take the time to choose loungewear that’s going to be not just comfortable, but also beautiful on you. Look for clothing in styles and colors that suit your natural skin tone and your natural shape.

If you have a warmer skin tone and hair color, stick to a color palette of reds, browns, yellows, pinks, and oranges in bold, vivid shades that have a lot of warmth and richness of color. If you have a cooler tone, look for icy color shades and soft pastels. Your natural looks will shine when you dress in colors that complement your natural shading.

Pick loungewear based on your body shape, too. If you are curvy on top, on the bottom, or both, tracksuits and sweatsuits will suit you well. The two-piece designs will help to show off those curves by giving your waist some definition. If you have a more athletic or rectangular build, sweatsuits and tracksuits may overwhelm your frame and make your curves disappear. Jumpsuits that have a cinched waist work well for women with more athletic or rectangular bodies, because they will help show your natural shape. Close-fitting thermal underwear works well for this body type, too.

Look for loungewear types that suit your shape and your clothing and your personal style. This way, you’ll feel good and look good and you’ll know it. It’s much easier to relax when you’ve got the right clothes that help you feel great.

B. Types of Loungewear for Men

There are lots of times when you need to be comfortable because you’ve just had enough of the ties, the blazers, the button-up shirts, and even the blue jeans and boots. But there are also lots of times when you can’t just walk around in your underwear.

When pajamas are too dressed down and regular outdoor clothes seem too dressed up, you need loungewear. This is like clothing you can sleep in but also still leave the house in. Put on your comfy clothes and surround yourself in the comfort you know you deserve to have. With the right types of loungewear, you can still look stylish and still be dressed and yet totally maximize your comfort at the same time.

Between pajamas and blue jeans, there is loungewear. This is clothing that’s made to maximize comfort. It’s perfect for hanging around the house, great for sitting on the couch and yet acceptable if you need to run to the corner store.

Loungewear can go out in public with you and you’ll still look stylish and dressed, instead of sloppy. Invest in some good loungewear and you’ll always have some great casual clothing to wear on those days when you just want to hang out at home…but you may still have to go somewhere anyway.

Tracksuits

Tracksuits make great loungewear. Tracksuits are made as a set with matching pants and a jacket, usually in a zip-up design. Tracksuits are made with soft cloth materials, not denim or leather. Cotton is a common tracksuit material. Men’s tracksuits are available in a huge variety of colors and patterns.

Wear a tracksuit with a casual T or polo shirt, and you’ll be ready to go anywhere. Or, you can just look great on your couch. Tracksuits have a bit of an athletic look to them, so you can look like you’re motivated even when you’re just hanging out.

Slacks and T-Shirts

Slacks and T-shirts just go together perfectly. A pair of athletic-style pants or cloth slacks look great with T-shirts in any style or color. If needed, you can always top off the outfit with a jacket to make yourself look a little more dressed if you need to leave the house.

Sweats

Sweats are perfect loungewear. Soft sweatpants are warm and comfortable, cozy around the body. Sweatshirts are made to be soft and they come in many different styles, typically crew neck and hooded. Sweats are available in a variety of patterns, but solid colors are more common. Sweatsuits are a great choice because they’re wrinkle-resistant, incredibly soft and made to be loose-fitting around the body. This creates a comfortable fit.

Finish the Look with Shoes

The whole point of loungewear is that you’re dressed in case you need to be. You’re ready for a day of relaxing around the house but you’re also ready to go…at least, you are if you have a pair of shoes. All your loungewear may look great but it’s going to end up looking a little silly if you put on a pair of loafers or work boots with your comfort clothes. Make sure you’ve got shoes that can finish off your look or you’ll end up looking very mismatched.

Simple canvas sneakers are a great finishing touch for any loungewear. You can slip them on with or without socks to create an effortless, carefree look that’s still super stylish. The simple sneaks won’t distract from your great loungewear.

Try a pair of casual loafers or boat shoes if you want to take your loungewear out of the house. These shoes can be worn without socks for a super casual look that’s absolutely perfect for loungewear. These styles don’t even have laces, so you can simply slip into them and go.

Picking the Right Pieces

What types of loungewear are just right for you? Think about your personal style and how you like to look. No matter how great your loungewear may be, you’re only going to wear it if you like the way it looks on you. Considering your style is very important, but don’t stop there. You also need to pay attention to the material your loungewear is made from and make sure that the fabric is going to be comfortable for you to wear, too.

Cotton is a common loungewear material. In fact, it’s used for all kinds of clothing. Cotton is a natural fiber that doesn’t itch or irritate the skin. It’s machine-washable and it’s naturally soft and breathable, which makes it ideal for loungewear. Cotton can be made into other types of fabrics, including canvas and flannel.

Linen is another popular material that’s prized for its lustrous feel. Linen is also a natural material that’s breathable and very soft to the touch. However, linen can be difficult to keep clean. It’s not as easy to wash and dry linen as it is cotton. You may find that your linen clothing wrinkles more easily than all-cotton items. Loungewear by nature is probably going to get wrinkled, so you want to consider this when you’re shopping for pieces.

Synthetic materials are a very popular choice in loungewear of all types. That includes polyester and rayon, which may be used in loungewear as part of a cotton blend. Synthetic fabrics are designed to be highly durable and machine-washable. Synthetic fabrics are generally very low-maintenance. However, some people find that their skin can be irritated by synthetic fabrics. Touch all your clothing and feel the material before you buy it to make sure it’s not going to cause you discomfort. The last thing you want in loungewear is discomfort!

Pick the pieces that look good and catch your eye. Choose items based on the way the material feels against your skin and the way it fits your body. Loungewear should be comfortable and well-fitting, nothing too big or too small. You want it to fit comfortably but not too loosely. Excess fabric will ride up and bunch up. Choose loungewear for its comfort and for its looks and you won’t go wrong.
